VEHICLE SAFETY
PROTECTION FROM CAR THIEVES AND CARNAPPERS

Carnapping or stealing a car by force has increasingly occurred in Metro Manila and other
provinces. Statistically your chances of being a carnapping victim is very slim if you observe
preventive actions which can reduce risk and chances for carnappers.

Reduce Your Chances of Being Carnapped

    1.        Getting In

Walk with purpose and stay alert. Approach your car with the key in hand. Look around
and inside the car before getting in.

    2.        On the Road

Keep you doors locked and windows rolled up, no matter how short the distance or how
    safe the area.

Look around, especially at places where you slow down or stop, such as garages and
parking lots, intersections, self-serve gas stations and car washes, highway entry and exit
    ramps, and ATMs.

When you’re coming to a stop, leave enough room to maneuver around other cars,
especially if you sense trouble and need to get away.

Avoid driving alone. Travel with someone if possible, especially at night.

Don’t stop to assist a stranger whose car is broken down. Help instead by driving to the
nearest phone and calling police to help.

    3.        Getting Out

Park in well lighted areas, near sidewalks or walkways. Avoid parking near dumpsters,
woods, large vans or trucks, or anything else that limits your visibility.

Never leave valuables in plain view, even if the car is locked. Put them in the trunk or out
    of sight.

If It Happens To You

If the carnapper threatens you with a gun or other weapon, give up your car. Don’t argue.
Your life is worth more than a car.

Get away as quickly as possible.

    Tell the police immediately.

More tips

    1.        Do not leave valuables and/or packages inside your car.
    2.        Do not leave your car/other motor vehicle unattended for long periods of time, especially
    at night.
    3.        Install a warning device to deter carnappers/thieves.
    4.        Lock your doors and close your windows even while driving. When a stranger attempts to
get in your car while at intersections, blow your horn and/or drive off, even if you have to
    violate traffic signals.
    5.        While driving and a motorist calls your attention to a flat tire, or that the car is on fire, do
not stop. Drive on and stop at a safe distance or a place where there are people around.
    6.        Never rely on “watch-your-car’ boys.
    7.        Remember that an honest driver is the best guarantee for your vehicle’s safety.
    8.        Require police clearance, photograph and character references from people applying as
    a driver.
    9.        Instruct your driver not to entrust your car key to other persons applying as a driver.
    10.        When your ignition key is lost, change ignition key at once.
    11.        Instruct your driver not to stay in your car while parked. He can fall asleep listening to the
radio or be so engrossed in reading comics or the newspaper and be an easy prey to armed
carnappers. The driver should securely lock the car and stay at a point near enough to have
    the car in sight.
    12.        Install a hidden master switch whenever possible.
    13.        Never leave your car windows open especially during traffic jams.
    14.        Garage gates must be secured and locked at all times.
    15.        Take your family members with you when you park.
    16.        Always park in lighted areas.

Parked Car Precautions

When going to or from your parked car in deserted areas:

    1.        When you leave your car, lock it.
    2.        As you approach your car, have the key ready.
    3.        Check the interior of your car before entering, especially the back seat.
    4.        At night, be sure to park your car under a light if at all possible.
