1. Use the measures outlined in this brochure. 2. Call the police at once if you notice suspicious strangers loitering near or in your place of business. 3. Never block the view into your store by crowding display windows. it is important to maintain visibility into your business establishment at all times 4. Secure your teller and cashier operations. Install barriers to keep unauthorized persons out of these areas. 5. If practical, mark doorways at varying heights to allow proper identification of robber’s height. 6. Install a holdup alarm system 7. Install a timed delay switch to turn off exterior lights after your employees have gone for the night. 8. Use two people to open and close your business. Establish, a system of pre-arranged signals. One person should stay outside until the other gives the all clear signal. 9. Keep cash on the premises to a minimum. Make frequent pickups of money from registers and make regular bank deposits. 10. Do not establish a habitual routine when making bank deposits. Robbers will soon learn it. 11. Keep the safe in your place of business locked at all times. 12. Check the references of job applicants before you hire them. 13. In the event you are contacted about an emergency at your business, and the call is of questionable validity, verify the call with the concerned government agencies or police station. 14. Have frequent meetings with your employees in order to familiarize them with holdup prevention measures which you have initiated.
IF YOU ARE HELD UP
1. REMAIN CALM. 2. DO NOT RESIST. 3. BE IDENTIFICATION CONSCIOUS. Observe the holdup suspect carefully for future identification. 4. REPORT THE ROBBERY IMMEDIATELY CALL YOUR NEAREST POLICE STATION OR POLICE COMMUNITY PRECINCT AND DONT HANG UP. 5. If possible, PROTECT THE CRIME SCENE: do not let anyone disturb it. Wait for police investigators. 6. COOPERATE WITH POLICE. By doing as they request you will help solve the crime
TIPS TO PERSONAL SAFETY AND IN THE STREETS
1. Beware of people who approach asking for directions. Keep a safe distance. 2. When carrying a purse, place only a few bills inside. If you carry a bag, don’t wrap the strap around your shoulder, neck or wrist, if your bag is grabbed, a strong strap will yield easily, and you may be injured. 3. At night, travel only in well-lit and well-traveled street. Avoid taking shortcuts in narrow side-roads when you’re alone. 4. Familiarize yourself with the routes you take in getting home. If you feel that someone is following you, run to the nearest store, gas station or building with guards for assistance. 5. Upon ‘returning home,’ particularly after dark, do not linger at the entrance of your’ residence. Be sure that your house key is ready before you reach the gate/door. If you feel that something is strange, do not enter but go elsewhere and call for police assistance. 6. Walk on the side of the street nearest to the oncoming traffic. 7. If accosted by someone in a car, run in the direction opposite of where the car is headed. ‘ 8. Avoid dark alleys, busy pathways, shortcuts through parks with lush shrubbery, vacant lots and other deserted places. 9. Stay near people but steer away from drunks and groups of suspicious-looking people who could be threats to dignity, life and personal property. If you pass by them, ignore their remarks. 10. Do not wander alone from the crowd at picnics or outings. Stay within calling distance. 11. Try to have presence of mind and remember the description of the thief when victimized. This way you help the police catch him and probably recover your valuables. 12. Do not resist an armed robber; he is dangerous and unstable. To be safe. and to avoid injury, always follow his instructions. 13. Be armed with a whistle with which to get help during your emergencies. 14. Don’t hitch rides with strangers. 15. Do not disturb the area where the hold-up was committed, to help the police. Fingerprints should be preserved. 16. When boarding a taxicab, if possible, ask someone you know to take note of the name, plate and body number of the taxicab. This may be useful later on. 17. Take note of peculiarities of robbers such as moles, tattoos, manner of speech and physical effects. 18. Do not give the robber any information; give only what he asks you. 19. Stay alert while riding in public conveyances. Look out for snatchers when seated near the windows of public conveyances or a car. 20. Keep the police emergency number taped to all your phones. 21. If the owner is a licensed gun-holder, keep the gun easily within reach. Remember that responsible gun ownership is responsible gun handling. 22. If you become a victim, try to remember all the details such as descriptions of the robbers, their manner of speech and accent, name called out during the robbery, etc. 23. Be sure that your house-help knows your office numbers or other numbers to contact in case of emergency. 24. When away at night, leave a light burning. 25. Do not panic. Stay calm and think rationally. Cooperate with the robbers if they are already in control.
Whenever you are walking or jogging in isolated areas, remember these personal safety tips:
1. Have someone accompany you if at all possible. Walking a dog, especially one inclined to bark at strangers, is preferable to being alone. 2. Let someone know where you will be and when you expect to return. 3. Know where you can run for help. Remember those emergency numbers that requires no coins to dial in pay telephones. 4. Avoid walking too closely to bushes, vacant lots or areas with any kind of tall overgrowth. 5. Avoid the temptation to daydream or otherwise become distracted. Know what’s going on around you. 6. Be alert to any sudden approach by a stranger. 7. Try to avoid being out late at night. If you are out after dark, always carry a flashlight with fresh batteries. 8. Whenever walking on a highway, road or street, always walk facing traffic. You should do this even when there are sidewalks, since it makes it more difficult for someone to drive up behind you without being noticed.
PROTECTION FROM SEX CRIMINALS
1. Do not wear provocative clothing which attract the attention of sexually inclined persons. 2. Do not accept rides or invitations from strangers, even friends you don’t completely trust. 3. Do not lose your composure when confronted by would-be-rapist. 4. Avoid unlighted places. Unlighted or poorly lighted parks are favorite hunts of sex criminals. 5. When riding alone in a taxicab, take note of the body and the plate number of the cab and its name. 6. When walking alone, avoid drunks, unruly groups of hangers on a street corner/intersection. Unless necessary, avoid walking alone. 7. When attacked, use your natural defenses and act fast, scratch, kick, jab; bite and scream. 8. When you break away from your attacker, continue screaming and run towards lighted places and possibly towards people. 9. At home, do not move alone half-dressed or naked. This is an invitation to “peeping Toms”, even rapists.
SAFETY AGAINST KIDNAPPING
1. Do not allow your children to play on the street. This is for their safety. 2. When walking alone in crowded areas, hold your child by the hand. 3. Know your children’s friends and their activities. 4. Warn your children not to accept candies or gifts from strangers. 5. While in the park or public playground, let your children play within your hearing and seeing distance. 6. Avoid going in/out on a fixed/regular schedule and change traveling route as often as possible. 7. Screen and choose your househelp, office worker, especially family drivers, carefully. Demand Police and NBI clearance. Upon hiring, it is advisable to take a photograph of your househelp and driver. 8. Instruct your office staff or househelp not to volunteer information about you and your every day activities. 9. Avoid a conspicuous and luxurious lifestyle — the more you are noticed, the more danger there is to you and your family. 10. Avoid personal ads like buy and sell of large properties that call attention to your financial status. 11. Make friends with your neighbors. Get them organized. They will inform you if there are any suspicious people observing or asking about you. 12. Try not to be alone in the car. Four or five passengers inside the car is a deterrent to kidnap attempts. 13. Be vigilant! Look to see if there are suspicious men around your area or any suspicious vehicle following you. 14. Prepare yourself mentally on what to do when a kidnapper’s car tries to intercept you. The surprise factor will work in your favor if you have presence of mind. Your car itself is a protection and a weapon. Lock your car doors and windows and keep on blowing your horn to attract as much attention as possible. 15. Avoid travelling through isolated roads.
PROTECTION AGAINST SWINDLERS
1. Do not extend credit to persons whom you do not know and trust personally. 2. Do not be conned or “sweet-talked” into removing your earnings or other valuables from safe-keeping. Chances are you will loose them. 3. Do not buy jewelry or goods at a cheap price from stranger. Buy only from reputable stores. 4. Do not trust people especially those whom you barely know, who promise you easy income but require you to withdraw your money from the bank. Remember money does not grow on trees for easy picking. 5. Instruct your households to contact you or any member of the family whenever they receive telephone calls that you or any member of the family met an accident and requiring them to bring your valuables to a place designated by the caller. This could be a trick to get your money and valuables. 6. Beware of street swindlers on the look out for deals. Remember that thete is no such thing as “double your money ventures. 7. Do not lured into a friendly game of gambling with people who have just been friendly to you.
PROTECTION AGAINST SCAMS
1. Know whom you are dealing with. If the company the persons represents is not familiar to you, conduct a background check by personally visiting the business location or looking into trade and industry department records. 2. Follow common business practice. A legitimate business enterprise, for instance, rarely transacts in cash on a Street corner. 3. Do not be shy about asking for details about any business agreement you do not understand. If you are not sure of what to ask, consult a lawyer. Remember it’s your money at stake. 4. Avoid dealing with businesses that have only post office boxes or mail drops without a street address or a direct telephone number. Chances are these are fly-by-night operations. 5. Do not be forced to sign non-disclosure or non-circumvention agreement which would prevent you from independently verifying the identities of the people you intend to do business with. Con artists often use these agreements to threaten their victims with civil suits if they report their losses to the police.
SAFETY IN THE SCHOOLS
While enroute to or from school please remember:
1. Walk to school with a parent if possible. 2. If you are not walking to school with a parent, walk to school with your friends. 3. Please, stay away from strangers and especially strangers in vehicles. 4. Cross the streets at a light or crosswalk. 5. Choose a safe and designated route to school. 6. If you are riding the bus, please stay seated and act appropriately. 7. Be aware of your surroundings.
While at school:
1. You are safe at school. Please stay at school until it is appropriate to leave. 2. When playing at school, play in a proper area inside the fence. 3. Carry sharp school objects or pencils in a proper holder. 4. Check your school rules and abide by them. 5. Stay away from persons on the outside of your schools fence. 6. Help us keep you safe.
